BURNING HOT THE BLACK FLAMES ARE BACK – 10TH MAY!
There hasn’t been a band like The Black Flames since Netherworld Dancing Toys and The Neighbours packed pubs across the land with their mix of classic soul and horn driven originals. That time has come again. The brainchild of Netherworlds founder Nick Sampson with long time collaborators Tim Robinson and Steve Shaw, The Black Flames is an 11-piece rockin’ soul powerhouse.
Up front… the effervescent Aaron Gascoigne who fronted The Blues Brothers Revue and ColdShock with his signature punch and panache. Exciting new vocalist Moana Richardson. And handily adjacent, belting six strings and singing, Sampson who wrote the evergreen NZ classic, ‘For Today’ (yes it’s in the Black Flames’ set). Keeping things honest… bassist Steven Shaw who is also part of alt country darlings The Loving Arms. Drummer Tim Robinson who ran away to join the Neighbours as a youngster and has played with pretty much everyone since. And Michael Larsen tinkling the ivories, who played with Jan Hellreigel’s band among others.
Blowing up a storm… the fiercest five-piece horn section you’ll hear this side of the Bombay Hills. All seasoned players with years of dues paid on sweaty stages far and wide. Ed Geddes on tenor sax, of the legendary Instigators. Trumpeters Cam McLean and Gary Neill from Auckland funk/soul ensembles including the Wonderfish Collective. Annette Hart on baritone and tenor sax, who’s played with The Alibis and Lucy & the Skylites. And Simon Berry on tenor, late of Surrey Boudit and Good Oil.
After a rip-roaring debut at the Paraoa Brewing Co in Whangaparoa and recently rattling the rafters at Galatos The Black Flames ‘are GO’.
So grab your dancing shoes, handbags and glad-rags, and get ready for a barn storming potpourri of old school soul and horn-fuelled rock ‘n’ roll. Songs you know and love – and some new ones you’ll never forget.
